Gov. Bill Weld swims in the Charles River.

August 7, 1996

After signing the Rivers Protection Act, a fully-clothed Weld dives into the river from a dock near the Eliot Bridge to dramatize the importance of cleaning up the river. The bill’s sponsor, Sen. Robert Durand (D- Marlborough) follows suit. Unbeknownst to them, a drain pipe had broken the day before and a subsequent test at the spot shows the water contains more than twice the fecal coliform level considered safe for swimming.
